Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC) is a comprehensive two-year community college located in downtown Los Angeles and part of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). Position Description:

LATTC is looking for a highly motivated and dynamic instructor to teach Physics/Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics; OR

Bachelor's in Physics or Astronomy AND Master's in Engineering, Mathematics, Meteorology, or Geophysics;

OR the equivalent

Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications:

Relevant teaching experience in the field of Physics, Engineering, and/or Astronomy, or any related field is a plus.

Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or related scientific discipline.

Community college teaching experience.

Industry experience is a plus.

Demonstrated excellence in classroom and student -laboratory environments.

Demonstrated ability to integrate technology, computers, multimedia, smart-boards, and other similar tools into the teaching environment.

Evidence of effective utilization of a Learning Management System (i.e., CANVAS).

Willingness to use computer simulation applications as part of teaching andragogy/pedagogy, or knowledge of computer simulation applications.

Evidence in demonstrating sensitivity to the issues of underprepared students at the Community College.

Desire to develop and implement new programs that encourage a broad spectrum of students to pursue Physics/Engineering as a transfer major, such as Women and Minorities in Science & Technology.

Participation in professional Physics, Engineering, or related organizations.

Experience with grant writing, development, and implementation of grant funded or other projects, building labs, or other design related technology.

Willingness to serve as a coordinator and mentor for partnerships with local universities, high schools, and industry.

Experience supporting applied STEM and Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways through interdisciplinary collaboration, contextualized instruction, curriculum development, or other student-centered instructional practices.

Experience with industry engagement, partnerships, or advisory board participation in areas such as biotechnology, process technology, manufacturing, energy, utilities, or related applied STEM fields.

Willingness to work on curriculum development and the implementation of an AS degree in Physics.

Team player who will collaborate with other faculty in a multidisciplinary environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position requires a commitment to the college of over 30 hours per week, including over 15 hours of teaching. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on the department's needs. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Advise student on LATTC Physics curriculum and classes and maintain office hours.

Advise students on LATTC Physics and related fields curriculum and classes.

Participate in college activities, including recruitment and community outreach activities and student clubs.

Plan and organize instructional materials toward course objectives and in accordance to the course outlines.

Utilize a variety of teaching methodologies and promote active involvement of students in the learning experience. Prepare and grade class assignments, projects, and examinations. Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and student records, and submit them in accordance with published deadlines.

Assume department duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g., participate in program review, Accreditation, student learning outcome assessments, revise course outlines, and participate actively on campus committees). Assist the department in increasing the transfer rate to 4 year colleges and universities.

Demonstrate initiative and organizational skills to achieve the goals and objectives of the department.

Participate actively in staff development and professional organizations to foster student success.

Maintain professional and ethical academic standards. Work well in a team oriented department.

Assist with informal student advising.

Salary and Benefits

The starting salary ranges from $76,960 to $143,000 for the 10-month academic year, depending on experience and professional preparation. The PhD differential is $4,870 per academic year. An excellent benefits package, which includes medical, vision, dental and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.
