Merced College is seeking a visionary and equity-minded Director of Student Housing to provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for current and future college-affiliated student housing initiatives. This role serves as a critical component of the College's commitment to student access, equity, retention, and completion by addressing housing insecurity and supporting holistic student success.

As a leader within Student Services, the Director of Student Housing oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of intersegmental, partnered, and college-supported housing programs, including the Merced Promise Housing Project. The Director collaborates closely with campus departments and external partners to integrate housing with comprehensive wraparound supports-such as counseling, academic planning, basic needs resources, mental health services, and transfer pathways-ensuring students thrive both academically and personally.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
This is an exempt classified management position. Under the direction of the Associate Vice President of Student Services, the Director of Student Housing Programs & Partnerships provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for current and future Merced College-affiliated student housing initiatives, including the Merced Promise Intersegmental Affordable Student Housing Project and other housing programs developed to support student access, equity, retention and completion.
The Director is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, administration and evaluation of student housing programs operated by, affiliated with, or partnered through Merced College. This includes intersegmental housing initiatives with four-year institutions, public or private partners, college-operated housing models and other housing strategies intended to reduce housing insecurity and support student success.

The Director serves as the primary liaison between Merced College and external housing partners, leads the integration of housing with student support services and ensures programs align with institutional priorities, regulatory requirements and best practices in student housing and residential support.
The Director also collaborates across the Student Services division to ensure students in affiliated housing receive comprehensive wraparound support, including counseling, academic planning, basic needs resources, mental health services, career and transfer guidance, and engagement opportunities designed to promote retention, completion and successful transition to four-year institutions or the workforce.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience
Additional compensation for doctorate
This is a categorically funded assignment contingent upon year-to-year funding


Examples of Duties

REPRESENTATIVEDUTIES

  • Provide leadership and oversight for Merced College-affiliated student housing programs, including current and future intersegmental, partnered, or college-supported housing initiatives.
  • Oversee Merced College's participation in the Merced Promise Housing Project and coordinate planning for additional housing opportunities that support student success.
  • Serve as the primary administrative liaison with university partners, housing operators, developers, and other external stakeholders.
  • Plan, develop, and implement housing policies, procedures, and eligibility criteria for Merced College-affiliated housing programs.
  • Coordinate housing allocation, onboarding, communication, and ongoing support for students participating in college-affiliated housing.
  • Coordinate with Counseling and Office of Relations with Schools to ensure housing students complete orientation, education planning and ongoing academic progress monitoring.
  • Collaborate with outreach, welcome center and recruitment efforts to integrate housing opportunities into onboarding and transition services for new and prospective students.
  • Collaborate with Student Services, Financial Aid, Counseling, Guided Pathways, Outreach, Transfer Center, and other campus units to integrate housing with student onboarding and wraparound supports.
  • Support the design and delivery of residential support models that promote persistence, academic success, belonging, and timely transfer or completion.
  • Monitor compliance with housing agreements, memoranda of understanding (MOUs), contracts, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze housing utilization, student success, and equity impact data; prepare reports and recommendations to inform institutional decision-making.
  • Assist in the development and management of budgets, grants, and special funding sources supporting student housing initiatives.
  • Coordinate crisis response, student conduct referrals, and support services for Merced College students residing in affiliated housing, working collaboratively with partners.
  • Participate in the planning, development, and operation of on-site or affiliated student resource centers connected to housing initiatives.
  • Represent Merced College at college, district, regional, and state meetings related to student housing, equity, transfer, and student success.
  • Promote equity-minded, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed practices across housing programs and partnerships.
  • Supervise assigned staff, consultants, or student employees, as applicable.
  • Serve on college and district committees related to housing, student services, equity, and strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
  • The mission and structure of the California Community Colleges
  • Student housing models, residential life support practices and housing affordability strategies
  • Intersegmental partnerships between community colleges, universities and external entities
  • Student equity, retention, completion and transfer initiatives

Typical Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education/Training/Experience
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
AND
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in student services, housing programs, transfer initiatives or higher education partnerships

License or Certificate
Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training/Experience

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Education Leadership, Public Administration or a related field
  • Experience working in a California Community College setting
  • Experience with student housing initiatives, basic needs programs or intersegmental partnerships
  • Knowledge of Student Equity & Achievement and Guided Pathways frameworks
  • Experience managing grants, contracts or externally funded programs
