INTRODUCTION:



The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announces an opening for an acting Dean, Academic Affairs, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC). LAVC is a two-year community college located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley and is one of nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. With an enrollment of more than 30,000 students from diverse backgrounds, LAVC provides strong transfer and career educational programs and is committed to student success. The College works closely with local secondary institutions to assist high school students in their transition to higher education and maintains strong ties to the business community by providing highly respected job training programs that meet the direct needs of local employers. The college offers 1 baccalaureate degree program, 73 associate degrees, 29 associate degrees for transfer, 66 certificate of achievement programs, and continuing education, noncredit, and job training programs. Today, it has nearly 200 full-time faculty and more than 500 part-time instructors. LAVC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

JOB DESCRIPTION:



LAVC is in search of a student-focused motivated and equity-minded individual seeking to join the College's administrative team. Under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and in accordance with the College's mission, the acting Dean of Academic Affairs will lead in the delivery, staffing, administrative support, supervision and evaluation of related programs and support staff in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Career and Academic Pathway.

A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to implement culturally responsive practices and processes to achieve positive race-consciousness and equitable student outcomes, gain buy-in from all employees, and develop strong relationships across all disciplines and functional areas to advance institutional goals. The acting dean leads and engages in enrollment management planning and promotes creative ideas that enable the college to be more productive, efficient, and continuously improve its services.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirements below:

  • Master's degree;

  • One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator's assignment;

  • A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Responsible for the overall management and supervision of departments within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Career and Academic Pathway.

  • Collaborate with Success Teams, faculty leaders, department chairs and deans to ensure broad communication and integrated planning college wide.

  • Apply participatory governance principles and collective bargaining agreements in a fair and consistent manner with faculty, staff, administrators and students, where applicable.

  • Oversee all fiscal processes for assigned program areas including developing annual budgets for assigned program areas; approving all expenditures related to the daily operation of the department; managing program income and expenses; and ensuring that program instructor payroll is completed in a timely manner.

  • Work cooperatively with designated areas with respect to program review and planning, student and service-learning outcomes, hourly rate assignments, contract compliance and evaluation.

  • Monitor teaching load assignments; use enrollment management tools and data for decision making; oversee and ensure the timely evaluation of faculty and classified staff; encourage faculty in their continuing professional development; and work to promote and maintain a collegial environment.

  • Interpret, articulate, implement, and monitor compliance with the California Education Code, Title 5 Regulations, LACCD Board Rules, LACCD Administrative Regulations, Human Resources Guides, Personnel Guides, Personnel Commission Laws and Rules, applicable state and federal laws, and collective bargaining agreements in a fair and consistent manner.

  • Facilitate communication that is timely, open, and transparent, fostering an environment that supports cultural competence and an equity-minded approach in the development of student success initiatives.

  • Oversee the screening, interviewing, and selection process of faculty, classified, and unclassified staff.

  • Communicate and promote program objectives and offerings to potential and current students, other educational institutions, community organizations, staff, instructors, and others.

  • Coordinate the investigation of and assist in the facilitation and the resolution of student, staff, and faculty conflict and complaints in accordance with State and District requirements.

  • Represent Academic Affairs on a variety of committees and subcommittees under the college's participatory governance structure.

  • Ensure the preparation, distribution and maintenance of required reports, records, and files by appropriate staff.

  • Serve as acting Curriculum Dean by facilitating curriculum development by department chairs, overseeing the college administration's "technical review" of curricular proposals, serving on the college's curriculum committee, and overseeing the college's compliance with the curricular provisions of Title 5, Board rules, and other appropriate regulations and policies.

  • Oversee catalog and class schedule production.

  • Serve as evening and/or weekend administrator as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned which support the overall objective of the position and the College mission and philosophy.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    The successful candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience in curriculum development, scheduling, FTE management, and compliance with regulation and contractual requirements.

  • Personal characteristics necessary for working with students, employees and the public in an administrative capacity, including demonstrating ethical behavior, stability, good judgment, tact, team spirit, and ability to cooperate with co-workers.

  • Sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

  • General knowledge of budget development, implementation and management.

  • Skilled in management through participatory governance, budgeting and financial planning, strategic planning, leadership, problem solving, revenue-generation, and team building.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and experience with leading presentations using appropriate technological resources.

  • Knowledge or experience related to compliance with applicable federal and state civil rights laws, collective bargaining agreements, policies, and procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience in writing, obtaining and implementing grants.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in planning, organizing and implementing programs



    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

    The Los Angeles Community College District determines placement on the pay scale depending on verified education and employment history. Current starting annual salary range is from: $175,836 - $206,448. The doctoral differential is $6,288 per academic year.
