The Automotive Mechanic is involved in the maintenance and repair of the District's automotive equipment. This position performs a variety of journeyman-level work related to repair, overhaul, and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered automotive equipment. The Automotive Mechanic performs tasks such as engine, transmission, brake and AC system overhauls; and inspection of mechanical and electronic components on utility vehicles. The Automotive Mechanic also works with various internal departments regarding scheduling of instructional and conference travel, field trips, and special events. The Automotive Mechanic is a valuable member of Merced College's Transportation Department and holds a critical role in maintaining a safe fleet of vehicles and carts for our staff and students. General Description
Under general supervision, performs journeyman-level work in the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of the District's gasoline and diesel-powered automotive equipment; and to do related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:
  • Performs complex mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered heavy duty automotive equipment, including electric vehicles, trucks and forklifts
  • Makes decisions as to the extent and type of repair to be done on individual pieces of equipment
  • Overhauls engines, transmissions, brake systems, differentials, air conditioning systems, carburetors
  • Tunes engines
  • Orders parts and accessories
  • Cares for and maintains shop tools and equipment
  • Keeps records of repairs and maintenance work as prescribed by the California Highway Patrol
  • Certifies vehicles in accordance with State smog laws
  • Assigns work and supervises student assistants
  • Responsible for shop activities
  • Other related duties as assigned

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered automotive equipment
  • Principles and methods used in a program of preventative maintenance for automotive equipment
  • Safe driving procedures
Ability to:
  • Inspect, locate, and diagnose mechanical defects
  • Estimate the cost of repairs
  • Order supplies and equipment
  • Use the tools and equipment necessary in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment
  • Keep records
  • Follow oral and written direction
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students


Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree AND at least one (1) year of applicable experience
    OR
  • High school diploma OR GED AND four (4) years applicable experience
    OR
  • High school diploma AND three (3) years applicable experience AND applicable certifications
    OR
  • The equivalent education and experience. .

License or Certificate:
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.
