Position Summary Information

Los Angeles Mission College seeks a full-time tenure track Chemistry Instructor who is experienced in teaching a variety of courses that include Introductory, General, and Organic Chemistry. Interested individuals who meet the minimum qualifications and possess the required experience are invited to apply. The assignment is to begin late-August 2026.

Introduction

Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC) is a two-year community college that serves more than 11,000 students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The college is one of nine in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). Founded in 1975, LAMC is in the scenic foothill community of Sylmar and has strong historical ties to the neighboring communities of San Fernando, Pacoima, Mission Hills, North Hills, Panorama City and Granada Hills. In recent years, the institution's enrollment base has expanded to include many of the communities throughout the greater San Fernando Valley, as well as Canyon Country and Santa Clarita. The college provides excellent transfer, basic skills, transitional, and career education programs. Job Description

LAMC is seeking a dynamic faculty member to teach a wide variety of Chemistry courses in its Physical Sciences Department that prides itself as an innovative and collaborative group of faculty and staff who collegially strive to offer our students stellar educational experiences. The department is seeking an innovative and creative faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to his/her discipline and hopes to attract an educator who will assist in the growth of its course offerings and transfer/employment opportunities for its students. The assignment may consist of day, evening and/or weekend classes to be taught in-person, and may include off campus, high school dual enrollment, hybrid and online courses. At LAMC, successful faculty applicants demonstrate the ability to promote:

    The successful candidate will be required to fulfill a full-time assignment, as specified by the current labor contract, including lecture, laboratory, office hours, and departmental/campus duties.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's in Chemistry; OR

  • Bachelor's in Chemistry or Biochemistry, AND

  • Master's in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Physics, Physics, or Geochemistry; OR the equivalent.

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic cultural, disability, and ethnicbackgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students.

    GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

    A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant's expense prior to employment.

    Eligibility Requirement: COVID 19 VACCINATION

    Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fulfill non-instructional duties (department and committee work, curriculum development, community outreach, shared governance, etc.) necessary for the smooth functioning of the department and the college.

  • Teach off-campus courses such as, high school dual enrollment, justice-involved facility offerings, or other non-traditional courses in keeping with community college philosophy, program standards and parameters.

  • Academic assignment may include a combination of day, evening, and/or weekend classes. May include assignments at satellite and/or outreach class sites;

  • Maintain professional and ethical academic standards;

  • Develop and implement laboratory activities in all Chemistry courses;

  • Provide class and laboratory instruction in accordance with established course outlines;

  • Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and student records and submit them in accordance with established deadlines;

  • Employ technology and innovative strategies to improve learning and student success;

  • Meet obligations with regard to grade reporting, meeting scheduled classes, meeting required office hours, and other directions provided by supervisors, including the Department Chair, Deans of Academic Affairs, Vice Presidents, etc.;

  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline;

  • Participate in recruitment and outreach activities of the college and department;

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair and supervising administrators;

  • Maintain office hours required to meet the needs of students for consultation and guidance;

  • Promote the College's values for creating a learning environment of respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking;

  • Create a classroom environment focused on active learning in which all students are comfortable and encouraged to participate;

  • Participate in the accreditation processes of the college;

  • Contribute to enhancing STEM student support services;

    The newly hired instructor should be prepared to teach the full range of credit Chemistry classes offered by the department. This instructor will also hold student conference hours, attend department meetings, be active on committees, and participate in other activities required by the College or the District.

    Desired Qualifications

  • Three or more years teaching Chemistry in the classroom and laboratory at the community college and/or university level;

  • Experience teaching science and non-science majors in Chemistry;

  • Experience teaching introductory, general, and organic Chemistry courses and the corresponding laboratories;

  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities;

  • Experience with different instructional modalities, knowledge of canvas, and various laboratory technologies;

  • Experience with and sensitivity to the learning needs of students who are under-represented in science academic programs and careers;

  • A strong commitment to active participation in department-level and college-level committees, programs and activities;

  • Experience in curriculum, program development, and grant writing;

  • Commitment to securing grants, research internships and other learning opportunities;

  • Strong oral and written communication skills;

  • Experience with development of Student Learning Outcomes, Institutional Learning Outcomes, and Professional Learning Outcomes along with their assessment and the creation of improvement plans;

  • A strong commitment to professional growth;

  • Ability to work as a member of a team with faculty, laboratory staff and student workers;

    SALARY AND BENEFITS

    Placement on the salary schedule is determined by academic preparation and/or employment experience in accordance with AFT Contract. The salary ranges from $76,960 - 143,000 annually. Applicants with a doctoral degree are eligible for a doctoral differential of $4,870 per year. District benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
