Department:
The Trade Specialist performs advanced-level maintenance, repair, and construction of District facilities and infrastructure. This position works across multiple trades including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, fabrication, and electronic access control systems.
Responsibilities include preventive and emergency maintenance, troubleshooting building systems, servicing lock systems, operating specialized fabrication equipment, and working from blueprints and schematics to ensure safe and code-compliant operations.

General Description:
Under general direction, performs a broad range of advanced-level skilled maintenance, repair, fabrication, and construction duties across multiple trades. Responsibilities include preventive and emergency maintenance of campus infrastructure, equipment, and systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, lock systems, and control equipment. Operates specialized tools and systems with a high level of autonomy, ensuring safety and code compliance throughout college facilities.
Examples of Duties
Representative Duties:
- Perform advanced-level maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair in support of trades positions including: electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, welding and painting
- Operate specialized metal fabrication equipment such as brakes, shears, and metal lathes to construct or repair components
- Perform emergency electrical repairs including work on power generators, transformers, and related control equipment
- Program, install, and maintain keyless entry lock systems and support mechanical lock repairs and key cutting
- Conduct preventive maintenance on building systems including HVAC units, lighting, and plumbing
- Paint interior and exterior surfaces; prepare surfaces, mix and match paints, apply finishes using brush, roller, or spray methods
- Paint signs, stencils, curbs, and athletic fields; install and maintain wallpapers and surface coatings
- Construct, repair, or install walls, ceilings, flooring, cabinetry, and other building components
- Prepare job plans and schedules for assigned projects; estimate time and materials needed
- Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces in a clean, orderly, and safe condition
- Assist with filter changes, system diagnostics, and component replacements on HVAC and other mechanical systems
- Work from construction drawings, blueprints, and technical schematics
- Operate and provide general maintenance to forklifts, lifts, trenchers, and other job-specific machinery
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge of:
- Methods, tools, and equipment used in trades including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, welding, and fabrication
- Programming and maintenance of electronic access control systems
- Emergency power and electrical distribution systems, including generators and transformers
- Safety standards, code requirements, and environmental regulations related to building maintenance and repair
- Preventive maintenance principles and diagnostics techniques
Ability to:
- Independently perform complex skilled tasks across a wide variety of trades
- Operate and maintain fabrication and repair equipment safely and accurately
- Troubleshoot high-voltage systems, control panels, and lock programming
- Safely perform work at heights or in confined spaces and with exposure to electrical systems
- Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, and construction plans
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and communicate effectively
- Work collaboratively and demonstrate sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds of college students and staff
- Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Associate's degree AND five (5) years of applicable experience
OR - Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of applicable experience
OR - High school diploma AND Journeyman-level professional training AND three (3) years applicable experience
OR - The equivalent education and experience.
Valid California driver's license
