Job Description:
JOB DESCRIPTION

This course is a continuation of Beginning Musical Theatre Techniques with emphasis on the applications of stylistic techniques for musical theatre ranging from the 1960s to present day. Individual exercises in acting, movement and voice as related to contemporary musical theatre are explored.

An audition or interview is required for the purpose of assigning solos and group performance roles. Instructor must be available starting February 2nd, 2026.

Courses include Beginning Musical Theatre 2 MW 8:30-11:00am and/or Applied Voice, which is an arranged hours course based on you and your students availability. Future classes may include Beginning Movement Techniques for Musical Theatre and Beginning/Intermediate Musical Theatre.

If hired:


  1. Successful candidates will work in close cooperation with the Musical Theatre Program Coordinator and report to the Department coordinator of the Theatre Arts Department.
  2. Responsibilities include but are not limited to teaching courses in
    • Musical Theatre Performance Technique
    • Auditioning for Musical Theatre
    • Applied voice
    • Beginning/Intermediate Movement for Musical Theatre
  3. Should practice and prepare difficult repertoire for performance with ensembles and applied students.
  4. Assists students in recital rehearsals.
  5. Helps prepare students to better perform musically with a piano and/or tracks for a public performance.
  6. Maintains a friendly, supportive atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and the public .

Minimum Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Masters or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/ performance

OR

Bachelors or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance

AND

Masters in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities

OR

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.

OR

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

Desirable Qualifications:
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Extensive knowledge of musical theatre repertoire, strong professional development as a director within the industry.

Knowledge of current trends in the professional industry, and the skills required to work within those trends.

Teaching experience in one or more of the instructional areas mentioned in the job description.

The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of the stylistic and technical nuances across various eras of musical theatre, including works by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Lloyd Webber, and more recent composers such as Jason Robert Brown and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

They should demonstrate proficiency in working with diverse vocal styles, complex musical arrangements, and the ability to guide both seasoned performers and students through the vocal, emotional, and technical demands of each performance piece. Experience with multi-genre, cross-cultural works and the ability to adapt direction to suit both traditional and innovative staging concepts is highly desirable.

Directly related professional performance experience is desired.

Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

Expertise in culturally responsive teaching in theater arts, particularly as it relates to the relevance of theater arts to students lives, interest, and communities; demonstrated ability to address equity gaps of racially minoritized groups within theater arts.

LMS experience/training (canvas).

Experience collaborating with faculty, staff, and community leaders in Theatre Arts programs and initiatives specifically designed to support historically underrepresented students in achieving their educational goals. This includes fostering partnerships with local arts organizations, creating mentorship opportunities for BIPOC and first-generation students, and developing inclusive curricula and productions that reflect diverse cultural narratives. The candidate should have a strong commitment to equity and access in the arts, ensuring that underrepresented students are provided with the resources, guidance, and opportunities needed to succeed academically and professionally.


Working Conditions:


Salary Range: $1572.67 - $1725.85 per lecture unit rate, $1572.67 - $1725.85 per lab parity unit rate, $1258.16 - $1380.60 per lab unit rate
