FY25 - NURSE INSTRUCTOR, MEDICAL SURGICAL

Full-Time Tenure-Track C-Basis

Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC) is located approximately 22 miles south of Los Angeles, near the Port of Los Angeles. The college primarily serves students from Harbor City, Carson, San Pedro, Gardena, Lomita, Wilmington, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The college is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Native Pacific Islander (NAANAPI) Serving Institution.

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announces a full-time, probationary, tenure-track Nursing Instructor, focusing on Medical-Surgical Nursing for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. In addition to Medical-Surgical Nursing, the candidate must be willing to remediate for another specialty. The position is scheduled to begin August 28,2025. Interested individuals who meet the state of California minimum qualifications and possess the required training and experience are invited to submit an application for the position.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM

The Nursing Program receives strong college support and has an excellent reputation in the community. The program is approved by the Board of Registered Nursing and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master'sdegree in Nursing; OR
  • Bachelor'sdegree in Nursing AND Master's in Health Education or Health Science; OR the equivalent OR the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher.
  • The minimum qualifications as set by the California Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher:

1. At least one year of experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care within the last five years in Medical-Surgical Nursing area;

o Minimum one year continuous full time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in med/surg; or

o Minimum one year teaching experience (two academic semesters or three quarters) of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in med/surg or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency and completion of at least one year of experience teaching courses related to med/surg or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing.

  • A current California registered nursing (RN) license.

  • Demonstrated evidence of sensitivity to and understanding culturally diverse academic, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.



    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT - COVID 19 VACCINATION:

    Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The primary assignment is to teach a full load of nursing and clinical courses. Duties and responsibilities associated with the position involve activities within the program as well as the larger college setting.

    The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

    1. Develop/revise syllabus in accordance with approved course outline.

    2. Maintain work schedule as defined by Standard Teaching Loads as defined in collective bargaining agreement, including required office hours

    3. Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology platforms, to teach students in a multicultural environment.

    4. Assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g., participate in program review, attend advisory committee meetings, revise course outlines, assist with student advisement, and participate actively on campus committees).

    5. Actively participate in nursing program faculty, curriculum, and evaluation committees.

    6. Maintain accurate documentation and submit records according to nursing, college, and clinical agency policies.

    7. Prepare and submit required paperwork to clinical facilities for student clinical placement.

    8. Collaborate with assigned clinical facility to maintain a desirable environment for the attainment of learning objectives.

    9. Assess student learning outcomes and develop/implement/evaluate change to improve outcomes.

    10. Attend nursing program and college professional events, including but not limited to, college commencement and pinning ceremony.

    11. Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in academic and clinical area.

    12. Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students.

    13. Participate in Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) approval and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) self-study and site visits.

    14. Comply with district, college, and nursing program policies in the performance of duties.

    SELECTION CRITERIA

    In addition to the requirements and responsibilities listed, the following criteria will be considered in selecting candidates for interviews:

  • Work experience- breadth and depth;

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities;

  • Curriculum development;

  • Program development;

  • Community involvement;

  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse socioeconomic community

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others;

  • Willing to remediate in additional BRN-approved instructional areas.

    Based upon the information presented on the application materials, a limited number of candidates with qualifications most pertinent to the position will be invited to participate in the selection process, which includes a written exercise, teaching demonstration and oral interview.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

    The current starting range is from $74,500 to $138,430 for the ten-month academic year depending on education and experience. The Ph.D. differential is $4,710 per academic year.
