Job Description:
CalWORKs Counselors collaborate with Social Services Agencies to support students receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits. They provide academic, vocational, career, and personal counseling to help students navigate educational pathways, develop career goals, and access support services for self-sufficiency. Counselors also collaborate with external agencies to ensure comprehensive student support.

Knowledge of CalWORKs/TANF program policies.

Experience and/or understanding of case management models, including maintaining detailed student records, track academic progress, track progress towards employment goals, and monitor compliance with program requirements.

Provide county intake and assessment, program orientation and onboarding support for prospective CalWORKs (noncredit & credit) students.

Apply student development philosophy and theory to provide comprehensive counseling services regarding degree and vocational education program planning, career decisions, goal clarification and personal life management to CalWORKs (noncredit & credit) students from diverse backgrounds.

Demonstrated experience and commitment to counseling students from diverse ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds to promote equitable student outcomes.

Counsel CalWORKs (noncredit & credit) students regarding choice of transfer institutions and requirements for programs at other colleges or universities.

Counsel CalWORKs (noncredit & credit) students regarding career choices, goal setting and decision making.

Experience in planning, overseeing and implementing group workshops, and conference presentations.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle, and Program Review development.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging diverse and/or underserved students. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Asian, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.

Demonstrated experience conducting in-reach, outreach, and recruitment of diverse student populations while maintaining collaborative partnerships with non-credit institutions, community organizations, and post-secondary institutions.

Participate in CalWORKs statewide and additional counseling related professional development activities.

Participate in department, division, county, and program meetings.

Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Maintain formal office and campus hours.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications:
Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or and career development

AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

(1) Have completed a minimum of nine (9) semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages

OR

(2) Have completed six (6) semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages

AND

Two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages.

OR

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.

Desirable Qualifications:
Demonstrated a minimum of two years full-time capacity of CalWORKs (noncredit & credit) counseling experience or equivalent.

Experience working with California community college student support services programs including Financial Aid, EOPS, CARE, Foster Youth, CalWORKs, DSS, System Impacted and Veterans.

Demonstrates competence in providing counseling services as evidenced by appropriate guidance to students career, academic, financial, psychological, and social/personal goals.

Experience in post-secondary career and transfer counseling, with a focus on academic and career exploration, transfer and articulation, probation, career and technical education.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience of career development assessment tools for helping students determine their major and career paths.

Experience using electronic student education plans, course placements, student information systems and internet for academic and career planning in a community college setting.

Ability to develop comprehensive student educational program plan (SEPP) in accordance with education code including but not limited to general education and transfer requirements for public, private, and out of state universities.

Knowledge of curriculum development, Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), and the program review cycle.

Demonstrated teaching and workshop facilitation experience in a post-secondary setting.

Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, which foster positive relationships with staff and students.

Bilingual in Spanish, Farsi, or Arabic.

Salary Range: $94,016 - $141,211 Annually

Special Instructions Summary:
Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.
