WELCOME TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE! Thank you for your interest in joining the SMC team as a Program Specialist. These positions provide student and program support to specially funded programs designed to increase academic access, retention and achievement for a targeted student population.
There is currently one vacancy in the STEM Program. The STEM program provides academic support designed to help traditionally underrepresented students. interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers, successfully complete their studies at SMC, transfer to a four year research orientated baccalaureate program, and enter the workforce. This position is scheduled to work, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience providing STEM student program support to low income, first generation, underrepresented and underserved student populations, be knowledgeable on higher education and/or District policies, practices, student programs and systems. This individual will be able to establish rapport with stakeholders, take initiative and be a self-starter to accomplish program objectives, be able to work independently, communicate and present information in an effective manner.

Salary Placement
New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.
Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.7. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.
About the Selection Process
The selection process will consist of a Scored Training and Experience Evaluation (Pass/Fail). (Click here for more information on the training & experience evaluation process) (Download PDF reader). All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and pass the Training and Experience Evaluation will advance to the Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%). Candidates must be successful on the Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a score of 70.00 or better for their name to appear on the eligibility list.
Two separate eligibility lists will be created from this recruitment: one for promotional candidates and one for external candidates. The promotional list will be used first, and must be exhausted before we can hire external candidates to fill vacant positions. The eligibility lists created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the six month life of the eligibility lists, including permanent and temporary positions.

Examples of Duties
Meets and interfaces with students in assigned program to provide assistance with predetermined educational and career goals; monitors student progress and assists with preparing and reviewing applications and applicable program documents.
Plans, organizes, promotes, and participates in student outreach activities targeting eligible students to the assigned program, and tracks applicable data to enhance program, systems or and/or service delivery.
Compiles, organizes, interprets, and tracks data including confidential student records; summarizes data from multiple sources and prepares complex internal and external reports for applicable grant(s) and internal and external stakeholders.
Speaks and presents at schools, community organizations, committees, workshops, and events to inform and provide guidance on program services, resources and requirements.
Serves as a liaison with students, parents, educational institutions, government agencies, private entities, and college departments to develop relationships, collaborate and leverage resources to integrate, implement and evaluate student program goals and outcomes.
Attends and participates in program-related community activities, professional conferences and meetings concerned with the development and implementation of student program to ensure compliance with program requirements, regulations and legislation.
Develops and maintains informational materials and utilizes online platforms to promote interest in the program, encourage student participation and enhance program visibility.
Serves as a technical resource in assigned program area to identify, clarify and resolve highly complex issues, and provides information and responds to program inquiries from District employees, students and the public.
May monitor budget, review expenditures and prepare purchase orders related to assigned student program.
May participate in the selection and training of student workers and prepare timesheets.
May administer, analyze and report results of applicable student program assessments.
May be required to travel and work at offsite locations.
Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
Examples of essential duties are descriptive and not restrictive in nature and are generally listed in descending order of importance.
Minimum Qualifications
Education Requirement:
Two (2) years of college level coursework or equivalent. A bachelor's degree is desirable.
Experience Requirement:
Four (4) years of experience performing specialized and complex student services duties. Experience including extensive public involvement, and participation in promotion, program operations or student support activities is highly desirable. Experience in student mentoring and student program operations in higher education is highly desirable.
Education/Experience Equivalency:
Experience and/or education of the same kind, level and amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Licensure and/or Certification:
A valid driver's license may be required for some positions.
