The Director will oversee and manage the Center, leading a dedicated team committed to enhancing career readiness, transfer opportunities, and equitable support services for all students. This role is essential in developing programs that expand career pathways, foster partnerships with four-year institutions, and improve the overall student experience at Merced College.

General Description:
Under the direction of the Dean of Student Services, the Career and Transfer Center Director is an educational administrator role as defined in Education Code section 87002(b) and is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and supervision of the Career and Transfer Center. The Director will work as a management employee as defined by Government Code section 3540.1(g) and will design, implement, and evaluate services that support career development, employment, internships, and successful transfer to four-year institutions. The Director will foster relationships with students, faculty, employers, and transfer institutions to increase student success in career placement and transfer pathways. The incumbent will also ensure compliance with state, federal, and institutional policies and regulations.
Examples of Duties
Representative Duties:
- Manage the daily operations of the Career and Transfer Center, ensuring the provision of student-centered career and transfer services.
- Develop, implement, and oversee the College's transfer programs and career services, including student employment, job/internship placement, and career development services, in alignment with institutional goals and frameworks such as Guided Pathways.
- Collaborate with faculty, counselors, and administration to integrate transfer and career services into the academic and student experience, supporting student success initiatives.
- Lead the strategic planning and development of transfer programs aimed at increasing student transfer rates to CSU, UC, and other institutions, with a particular focus on underrepresented students.
- Oversee and coordinate events such as career fairs, transfer fairs, workshops, and information sessions that connect students to potential employers and transfer institutions.
- Supervise and evaluate personnel in the Career and Transfer Center, providing professional development and ensuring alignment with College policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with employers and four-year institutions, ensuring students have access to internships, job opportunities, and clear transfer pathways.
- Monitor student progress toward career readiness and successful transfer, implementing data-driven strategies to improve program outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including reporting and maintaining appropriate records related to career services and student transfer.
- Manage the Center's budget, overseeing expenditures and aligning resource allocation with strategic goals and coordination of career assessments.
- Develops and implements marketing programs to inform students of program services, developing materials, advertisements, and making presentations.
- Supervises, trains, and evaluates Career & Transfer Center employees.
- Monitors budget expenditures and makes sound fiscal decisions
- Prepare reports and data analyses related to career placement, transfer rates, and student outcomes, submitting data to appropriate state and institutional stakeholders.
- Participate in regional, state, and national meetings related to career and transfer services, representing the College at external functions.
- Current practices in career development, job placement, and transfer pathways for community college students.
- Transfer agreements and articulation between community colleges and four-year institutions.
- Data analysis, student outcomes tracking, and reporting for state and institutional compliance.
- Federal and state guidelines governing career services and student transfer.
- Team leadership, staff supervision, and program evaluation.
Ability to:
- Lead a comprehensive Career and Transfer Center, providing strategic vision and operational management.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to design and implement services aligned with institutional goals.
- Effectively market career services and transfer opportunities to students, employers, and transfer institutions.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with employers, educational institutions, and community partners.
- Analyze data and prepare reports to evaluate and improve the Center's services
- Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.
Typical Qualifications
Required:
Education/Training/Experience:
- Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Personnel, or a related field AND
- One (1) year of leadership, formal training, internship, or administrative experience related to career services and student transfer AND
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Desired:
Education/Experience
- Two (2) years of experience supervising a department or program related to career services or student transfer AND
- Knowledge of the community college transfer process, including agreements with CSU, UC, and private universities AND
- Experience working with underrepresented student populations and developing equity-driven services.
