Overview of DE Coordinator Activities*
Under the supervision of the assigned dean, and in collaboration with the Academic Senate, the Distance Education (DE) Coordinator provides faculty leadership and training in support of East Los Angeles College's (ELAC) distance education courses, programs and students. Distance education is currently supported by two classified employees, an Online Multimedia Specialist and an Online Technical Support Assistant.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
o First year contract faculty members may be assigned only up to forty (40) percent of a full-time assignment; second year contract faculty members may be assigned only up to sixty (60) percent of a full-time assignment; third- and fourth-year contract faculty members may be assigned only up to eighty (80) percent of a full-time assignment.
o If the position is unable to be staffed by a regular or contract faculty member, hiring an adjunct faculty member on a seniority list may be authorized as specified under Article 13 of the AFT Faculty collective bargaining agreement. Adjunct faculty on a seniority list are limited to an assignment of up to only two (2) semesters within a three (3) consecutive year period. References: AFT 1521 CBA and LACCD HR-R 121

Job Duties
1. Develop, coordinate and/or lead ongoing trainings and resources to support faculty teaching online courses by integrating evidenced based practices that include Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, elements of Peer Online Course Review (POCR) and California Virtual Campus standards, to create inclusive, accessible, and high-quality online learning experiences.
2. Meet with faculty in person, online, and by phone and answer faculty questions about using Canvas and online pedagogy.
3. Recommend instructional practices and implement strategies to increase student engagement and motivation, leveraging UDL principles and equity-minded online teaching practices.
4. Lead, offer, coordinate, promote, and/or workshops and webinars to faculty on distance education topics that include, but are not limited to:
Accessibility
Universal Design Learning
Canvas Video Captioning
Course Design and Using Modules
Course Copying and Archiving
Humanizing Your Course
LACCD DE Certification and professional development
Regular Substantive Interaction in Distance Education Courses
5. Develop, maintain and disseminate a repository of resources for online instruction including template modules, template canvas shells, videos, quick guides, how-to's, and materials in Canvas, DE-related SharePoint, Vision Resource Center, and websites.
6. In coordination with assigned dean of Distance Education, serve as the faculty Distance Education contact for external agencies and accreditation efforts; provide access to course shells for observers and reviewers
7. Update, revise and maintain the ELAC Distance Education Handbook for Distance Education Committee and Academic Senate approval.
8. Lead and collaborate on the development of the Distance Education Program Review/Annual Unit Plan with distance education unit members.
9. Stay apprised of artificial intelligence developments related to distance education and applications within Canvas; regularly communicate out pertinent information to faculty, staff, administrators, and relevant committees
1. Lead the college's implementation and support of Canvas, that includes sending notifications to faculty and students, and resolving any technical issues that arise.
2. Assist and/or lead student troubleshooting when students encounter issues logging into Canvas or accessing courses in Canvas; respond to student emails, calls, Canvas messages, etc., as needed
3. Communicate with students in Canvas through global announcements and the Student Support Hub.
4. Facilitate with student support services including DSPS accommodations for students.
5. Create course shells for instructors using Canvas each term-online, hybrid, and web-enhanced classes; update shells when there are instructor changes.
6. Create Canvas shells for committees, departments, and development shells for instructors working on building course materials, and programs on campus and unofficial (not tied to PeopleSoft) Canvas accounts for tutors, accreditation and any other external observers.
7. Resolve issues with the PeopleSoft/Canvas synching process, adding, changing, and removing enrollments in Canvas.
8. Manage Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integrations in Canvas; LTIs are integrations that need to be set up in Canvas at the subaccount level.
9. Collect and share data about Canvas usage.
10. Maintain communication and hold meetings with our Canvas Customer Success Manager.
1. Distribute and coordinate student evaluations for online instructors (per department chairs' requests) aligned with AFT 1521 Faculty Guild Collective Bargaining Agreement (Articles 19 & 42) (some semesters this can be upwards of 400+ evaluations).
2. Communicate with faculty, department chairs and the assigned dean; provide access to individual faculty Canvas shells for the purpose of observations of faculty (Articles 19 & 42) for basic and comprehensive evaluations per the 2023-2026 AFT 1521 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
3. Work with outside vendors for distance education-related needs and procurement (for example, ALEKS for Math instructors, Pronto communication tool, and NetTutor online tutoring).
4. Support OER and ZTC adoptions in online courses in collaboration with ZTC-OER faculty
1. Chair and coordinate meetings of the Distance Education Committee
2. Monitor distance education services and provide recommendations to the Distance Education Committee, Educational Planning Subcommittee and/or the Academic Senate for service improvements based on student feedback and performance data to identify and address learning barriers, ensuring a supportive and responsive online learning environment.
3. Represent college on District Distance Education Committee, California Community Colleges DE Coordinator (CCC DECO), Annual Distance Education Conference and regularly report back to the Academic Senate and other stakeholders
4. Work with the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office to participate in their faculty and student surveys and to complete their annual distance education survey.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This is a 12-month, D-basis, 1.00 FTE one-year limited faculty coordinator ISA position. This position is renewable annually, based on assignment restrictions, evaluation of outcomes and performance, and availability of funds. Current regular and contract faculty will continue at their current salary rate. If the recommended hire is not currently assigned as a regular or contract faculty member, the beginning salary range is $89,400 to $166,116, and the recommended hire will be placed within the salary range commensurate with academic preparation and experience. The doctoral differential is $5,652 per academic year. District benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance.
