NURSING DEPARTMENT

ELAC offers an Associate in Science Registered Nursing Degree Program (ADN). Program curriculum is based upon the National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN), Quality Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN), and the Nursing Process. The curriculum is structured according to simple-to-complex knowledge and skills attainment. Students are provided with theory knowledge concurrently with clinical experience. The RN program is affiliated with local hospitals and other health care agencies where students administer direct nursing care to patients under the supervision of nursing faculty. By focusing instruction on a student-centered approach which provides students with integrated learning experiences in a variety of healthcare and community agencies, the ELAC RN Program is committed to preparing graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to improve and advance health care in the community.

POSITION

The ELAC Department of Nursing is seeking to fill 1 Probationary Tenure-Track position in Medical-Surgical Nursing. The positions will begin in the Fall 2025 semester. Instruction involves theory, laboratory, and clinical teaching responsibility.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at ELAC includes lower division courses. Faculty members are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. The regular weekly teaching load is 15 standard hours. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs. In addition to the regular weekly teaching load, duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach theory, laboratory, and/or clinical components of medical-surgical courses;

  • Teach courses over an academic year in accordance with established course outline;

  • Provide resource and coaching to students as needed;

  • Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLO's);

  • Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact;

  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the academic field;

  • Interface with the assigned clinical facility to maintain a desirable environment for the attainment of learning objectives;

  • Develop and update department course curricula;

  • Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology platforms to teach students in a multicultural environment;

  • Active involvement in campus responsibilities (committee obligations in accordance to faculty contract, accreditation, etc.);

  • Assist in developing new courses and curricula in Nursing as needed;

  • Assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g., participate in program review, plan and attend advisory committee meetings, revise course outlines, assist with student advisement, and participate actively on campus committees);

  • Develop supplementary materials and incorporate instructional technology to complement textbooks, other published materials, and lecture presentations;

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Nursing OR

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing AND Master's degree in Health Education or Health Science OR the equivalent

  • OR the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher

    1. At least one year of experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care within the last five years in Medical-Surgical Nursing area;

    2. Minimum of one-year teaching experience (two academic semesters or three quarters) in Registered Nursing Program in Medical/Surgical Nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing. (Please also refer to Application Procedure #7).

  • AND a current California RN License by the start of employment.

  • AND a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    HEALTH

    A medical certificate indicating fitness to instruct or associate with students is required at the applicant's expense after selection from an eligible list and prior to employment. Additional health and other requirements required by the District and/or clinical facilities may include but not limited to:

  • Tuberculosis Screening

  • Evidence of Immunity to Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (German Measles), Varicella (Chicken Pox), and Hepatitis B

  • Tdap/Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis or Whooping Cough)

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS



  • A recent and strong background in Medical-Surgical Nursing acute care practice (three to five years' experience within the last five years);

  • A second BRN specialty approval (Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing or Pediatric Nursing or Obstetrical/Maternal Child);

  • Experience in Geriatric Nursing;

  • Possess an excellent academic record and have experience teaching adult medical surgical nursing in the community college setting;

  • Exhibit knowledge of current nursing theory and clinical practice in the subject matter to be taught;

  • Possess the ability to assume responsibility and accountability for instruction, evaluation of students, and planning and implementing curriculum content in the content area;

  • Demonstrate a commitment to student success;

  • Facilitating student learning by designing varied interactive learning environments including the use of clinical simulation, virtual reality, and high-fidelity simulators;

  • Experience in using Canvas Learning Management System, Zoom meeting, curriculum development, NCLEX-RN Prep, ATI testing service, and previous student success experience will be highly desirable;

  • Demonstrate the understanding of, or have experience in, the use of student learning outcomes (SLO's) in promoting student success;

  • Possess a commitment to collegiality within the instructional environment by interacting effectively with colleagues and maintaining active participation in departmental meetings and committees;

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students;

  • Ability to communicate clearly with students and colleagues;

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations;

  • Ability to adapt to changes in nursing education and health care delivery.

    COMPENSATION

    The current salary starting range is from $74,450 to $138,430 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $4,710 per academic year. The District provides an excellent benefit package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.

    7. Evidence of eligibility for California Board of Registered Nursing approval as an Instructor (16 CCR 1425 (a (1), c) in the content area (Medical-Surgical Nursing) by providing the following:

  • A master's or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration;

  • Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing area to which he or she is assigned, which can be met by:

    A. One (1) year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a Registered Nurse in the designated nursing area; or

    B. One (1) academic year of Registered Nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency; and

    C. Completion of at least one (1) year experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching Registered Nursing.
