POSITION

The LACCD is accepting applications for College Studies Instructor positions at Los Angeles Valley College for the FY2025 Academic School Year. The purpose of this posting is to create a pool of qualified applicants so that when there is an actual opening at a one of our colleges, the college can then begin their review process by reviewing those applicants. The LACCD is seeking dynamic, motivated and diverse candidates for part-time faculty positions to engage and educate our students. Successful candidates will collaborate, communicate and work as professionals with students, staff, faculty and administrators. Applicants with a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population are strongly encouraged to apply.

The subject College Studies is currently being offered at Los Angeles Valley College, and creates a holistic introduction to college for onboarding new students as part of Guided Pathways. New students often struggle to acclimate to the academic and social expectations of college. This course will help students identify academic and personal priorities, and acquire the tools to achieve their academic goals. College Studies sections will be taught by faculty members from different disciplines to help guide students' career exploration in the college's Career and Academic Pathways (CAPs). In the future, some sections of College 101 could focus on specific CAPs or affinity groups, such as Black Scholars, Veterans, etc. College Studies allows integration and application of college readiness skills, essential academic skills and critical thinking, information literacy, non-cognitive skills, and exploration of campus services related to the student's selected CAP.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in any field AND Two (2) years of full-time related professional experience

    OR

  • Associate degree in any field AND Six (6) years of full-time related professional experience.

    (Note: The professional experience required must be directly related to the teaching assignment.)

  • A sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.



    VERIFICATION OF OCCUPATIONAL EXPERIENCE: DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    Successful applicants will be able to provide a Verification of Employment letter from a current or previous employer that substantiates knowledge, skills and abilities. Verification of Experience Letters must be on company letterhead stationery indicating:
    • Dates of employment
    • Position title
    • State if experience was full or part-time (if part-time, please indicate the weekly percentage or hours worked)
    • Description of related duties performed

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A record of professional development activities targeted towards culturally responsive teaching and best practices for achieving student equity (e.g. TIA, Teaching Men of Color, American Council on Education, Culturally Response Teaching and Ally Training).

  • Ability to collaborate with other College 101 instructors to evaluate, refine, and innovate ways to improve the course.

  • Certified to teach online in Canvas.

  • A record of additional professional development activities related to online teaching, and experience teaching online.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT COVID 19 VACCINATION:

    Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

    DUTIES, but not limited to:
    • Use the developed College 101 materials to teach web-enhanced, hybrid, or online section(s) of the course.
    • Participate in student advisement and both facilitate and participate in program, campus, and CAP extracurricular activities with the students.
    • Contribute to the life of the college, including committee participation and professional development.
    • Participate in Student Learning Outcome assessments.
    • Participate in additional evaluation and assessment related to the implementation of this new course.
    • Assist in curriculum and program development of College 101.
    • Be available to students through scheduled student drop-in hours.



    COMPENSATION

    The salary schedule for adjunct instructors begins at $86.85 per standard hour, plus an office hour differential of $20.32 per hour for classroom assignments. Applicants with a doctoral degree are eligible for a doctoral differential.
