The Merced College Nursing Programs aim to prepare students for careers in nursing. The Professor of Vocational Nursing has the opportunity to provide innovative and extensive outreach in the local community and will be an integral part of the student educational experience. In addition, they partner with local health care agencies and aid in the promotion of the health care through nursing throughout the region and within the Merced Community College District. General Description:


This is a full-time, tenure track instructional assignment in the Nursing department at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Allied Health and Public Safety, and the Associate Dean of Nursing. The professor will teach a variety of Nursing courses, which may vary from semester to semester, and must be able to integrate the basic principles of nursing into both classroom and clinical instruction. The professor also must be able to assume responsibility for students in clinical facilities and establish and maintain communication between the facilities, its employees, and the College. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening and weekend hours.

The Merced College Licensed Vocational Nursing Program aims to prepare students for careers as professional Vocational Nurses by providing a continually-improving educational program that is accredited by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). This position has the opportunity to provide innovative and extensive outreach in the local community, and with our educational partners, to aid in the promotion of the nursing profession throughout the region and within the Merced Community College District. Area faculty are committed to helping students attain their educational goals by preparing students to take the National Licensure Examination, which is designed to prepare competent nurses for service in the community.

Examples of Duties


  • Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students
  • Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)
  • Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes


Typical Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an acceptable accredited institution and two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment
    OR
  • Associate's degree from an acceptable accredited institution and six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment
    AND
  • Satisfy BVNPT "Instructor" requirements listed in the BVNPT "Vocational Nursing Practice Act with Rules and Regulations" guide, as follows:
    • Enrollment in, or completion of, a course in the principles of teaching
      AND
    • Hold a current California active license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse
AND
  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an approved school OR a valid teaching credential OR have completed a minimum of one year full-time teaching experience in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing or psychiatric technician school within the last five years OR met community college or state university teaching requirements in California
    AND
  • Have a minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse within the last five years
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.
