Job Description:
Assists in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory or for a technical support service center; performs specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations.

Assists faculty in the use of a variety of equipment, materials and supplies.

Prepares and issues materials and equipment for student use; maintains records of materials and equipment used by students.

Prepares instructional materials and equipment for faculty demonstration and student use as requested, according to approved procedures.

Maintains laboratory environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

Orders, receives and stores supplies, materials and equipment; maintains inventories, assures that adequate quantities are available for instructional use.

Troubleshoots, adjusts, maintains and performs minor repairs to equipment; reports major repair needs or arranges for repairs according to established procedures.

Prepares and maintains various records and reports related to laboratory operations and activities as required; operates a variety of equipment related to the specialized area of assignment; performs some clerical duties as required.

Assists in the coordination of exhibits or the use of lab facilities and assures the availability of appropriate supplies and equipment.

Trains and provides work direction to others as directed.

Learns and applies emerging technologies and advances as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.

Participate in District/College efforts to increase the diversity of faculty and staff and to address student achievement gaps; active assistance in the creation of a welcoming and inclusive work and educational environment; attend and participate in diversity, equity and inclusion trainings and events.

Performs related duties as assigned.

In addition to the essential functions, the Laboratory Technician may prepare for and host various public functions, as well as maintain budgets for their assigned department.


Primary Purpose:
This position is responsible for performing specialized and technical duties to assist in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory or a technical support service center.


Working Relationships:
The Laboratory Technician maintains frequent contact with various District personnel; students and outside vendors.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and equipment of assigned subject area

Knowledge of the proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the assigned classroom or laboratory

Knowledge of appropriate safety regulations (OSHA and District) used in the assigned classroom or laboratory

Knowledge of principles and practices of providing work direction and training

Knowledge of record-keeping techniques

Knowledge of District organization, operations, policies and objectives

Knowledge of technical aspects of field of specialty

Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work

Ability to perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations

Special Requirements:
Coursework must be verifiable on a legible transcript. Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED; two years college-level course work in area of specialization and extensive practical experience in area of specialization.

Desirable Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience with purchasing and cataloguing equipment and maintaining/tracking inventory, including the ability to oversee equipment loan program to students, staff, and faculty.

Ability to positively interact with and provide support for the members of our campus community and to demonstrate proficiency in both verbal and written communication.

Experience with using, installing, and maintaining software such as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, basic knowledge of networking concepts (e.g., Wi-Fi setup), and connecting and configuring network devices like printers and scanners.

Demonstrated aptitude to or direct experience with the supervision of student workers.

Demonstrate basic skills and tool usage for routine maintenance on computers, peripheral devices, and the assembly of lab equipment, as well as for other general lab maintenance and needs.

The ability to address the needs of diverse student and/or employee populations.

Prior experience in approaching work and interactions with colleagues and/or students in an equity minded manner.Ability to provide an inclusive and welcoming work/educational environment.


Working Conditions:
Lab environment: subject to exposure to chemicals, hazardous and/or toxic solutions, biohazardous materials, and/or fumes, lifting (up to 50 pounds unassisted), climbing, standing for long periods of time, using electrical tools.


Salary Range: $5,397 - $6,503 Per Month

Special Instructions Summary:
Work Schedule: District employees can apply for the Flexible/Hybrid Work Program, working a hybrid schedule of remote work and in-person each week. Approval and number of in-person days may vary by position/department. Questions regarding the work schedule may be discussed with Hiring Manager if selected as an interview candidate.

This is a classified position subject to a one-year probationary period. Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with Board Policy and is not negotiable. The candidate selected for employment will be required to provide the following: identification and employment eligibility as outlined in the Immigration Reform and Control Act, fingerprints and required medical certification pursuant to statue. NOCCCD will not sponsor any visa applications.

Minimum Qualifications - Experience: One year of experience is equivalent to 12 months of experience at a maximum of 40 hours per week (full time). Applicable part-time experience will be converted to the full-time equivalent for the sole purpose of meeting the experience minimum qualification (Example: Twelve (12) months of part time work experience is equivalent to six (6) months full time).

Minimum Qualifications - Education: 24 units are equal to one year of education. As applicable, education must be from a regionally accredited institution and verifiable on a legible unofficial transcript.
