Position Description:

Los Angeles Trade-Technical College seeks an innovative, student-centered, and collaborative Physics Instructor to join the Applied Sciences Department. The successful candidate will provide high-quality instruction in Physics while supporting both university transfer and Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways through engaging lecture and laboratory experiences.

The department seeks an educator who can connect fundamental physics principles with real-world applications across engineering, biotechnology, process technology, manufacturing, energy, utilities, instrumentation, automation, and other applied STEM disciplines. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and instructional practices that prepare students for transfer, workforce opportunities, and lifelong learning.

In addition to excellence in teaching, the successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth of the Physics program through curriculum development, laboratory innovation, student engagement, outreach, and collaboration with faculty, educational partners, and industry.



Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics; OR
  • Bachelor's in Physics or Astronomy AND Master's in Engineering, Mathematics, Meteorology,Geophysics; OR
  • The equivalent;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching physics using contextualized, application-based instruction that connects scientific principles to engineering, biotechnology, process technology, manufacturing, instrumentation, automation, energy, utilities, or other applied STEM disciplines.
  • Professional experience in industry, applied research, government laboratories, manufacturing, biotechnology, engineering, instrumentation, automation, energy, utilities, or other technical environments where physics principles are applied.
  • Experience supporting Applied Sciences and Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways through interdisciplinary collaboration, contextualized instruction, curriculum development, or student-centered instructional practices.
  • Experience collaborating with industry partners, Career Technical Education (CTE) advisory boards, workforce organizations, employer partners, or community organizations to strengthen curriculum, laboratory experiences, student engagement, internships, and career pathways.
  • Experience developing laboratory activities emphasizing instrumentation, measurement systems, automation, process control, sensors, data acquisition, troubleshooting, experimental design, and applied problem solving.
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.Community college teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in classroom and student -laboratory environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology, computers, multimedia, smart-boards, and other similar tools into the teaching environment.
  • Evidence of effective utilization of a Learning Management System (i.e., CANVAS).
  • Willingness to use computer simulation applications as part of teaching andragogy/pedagogy, or knowledge of computer simulation applications.
  • Evidence in demonstrating sensitivity to the issues of underprepared students at the Community College.
  • Desire to develop and implement innovative programs that encourage a broad spectrum of students, including women and historically underrepresented populations, to pursue Physics, STEM, Applied Sciences, and Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways through engaging, experiential, and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
  • Participation in professional Physics, Engineering, or related organizations
  • Experience with grant writing, development, and implementation of grant funded or other projects, building labs, or other design related technology.
  • Willingness to serve as a coordinator and mentor for partnerships with local universities, high schools, and industry.
  • Willingness to work on curriculum development and the implementation of an AS degree in Physics.
  • Team player who will collaborate with other faculty in a multidisciplinary environment.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This position requires a commitment to the college of over 30 hours per week, including over 15 hours of teaching. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on the department's needs. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Advise student on LATTC Physics curriculum and classes and maintain office hours.
  • Advise students on LATTC Physics and related fields curriculum and classes.
  • Participate in college activities, including recruitment and community outreach activities and student clubs.
  • Plan and organize instructional materials toward course objectives and in accordance to the course outlines.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching methodologies and promote active involvement of students in the learning experience. Prepare and grade class assignments, projects, and examinations. Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and student records, and submit them in accordance with published deadlines.
  • Assume department duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g., participate in program review, Accreditation, student learning outcome assessments, revise course outlines, and participate actively on campus committees). Assist the department in increasing the transfer rate to 4year colleges and universities.
  • Collaborate with faculty across Applied Sciences programs to develop interdisciplinary curriculum, laboratory experiences, and instructional activities that strengthen the Physics program and support university transfer, Career Technical Education (CTE), and interdisciplinary Applied Sciences pathways..
  • Develop laboratory experiences and experiential learning opportunities that connect physics principles with engineering, biotechnology, process technology, manufacturing, energy, utilities, automation, instrumentation, and other applied STEM disciplines.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with industry, advisory boards, workforce organizations, educational institutions, and community partners to support program development, outreach, internships, and student career opportunities.
  • Demonstrate initiative and organizational skills to achieve the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Participate actively in staff development and professional organizations to foster student success.
  • Maintain professional and ethical academic standards. Work well in a team oriented department.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled, and ethnic background of community college faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assist with informal student advising.




Salary and Benefits:

The starting salary ranges from $76,960 to $143,000 for the 10-month academic year, depending on experience and professional preparation. The PhD differential is $4,870 per academic year. An excellent benefits package, which includes medical, vision, dental and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.
