Description


SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of an appropriate manager or administrator, the Lead Peer Mentor provides peer mentoring and serves as a student leader within the assigned Peer Mentor program. In addition to providing direct support to a limited caseload of students, the Lead Peer Mentor assists with coordinating mentor activities, supporting the onboarding and training of Peer Mentors, and communicating program information and student needs to program staff. The position serves as a resource and role model for other Peer Mentors and assists with the planning and implementation of workshops, orientations, outreach activities, and other program events.

The Lead Peer Mentor is expected to demonstrate strong leadership, initiative, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills; serve as a positive role model; and maintain appropriate boundaries while referring complex student concerns to program staff or appropriate campus resources.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Provide peer mentoring and support to an assigned caseload of students through individual meetings, regular check-ins, and other approved forms of communication.

Serve as a positive role model and student leader for Peer Mentors by demonstrating professionalism, dependability, initiative, and effective communication.

Assist Peer Mentors with questions regarding program procedures, activities, and resources, referring questions or concerns requiring staff assistance to the appropriate program staff.

Assist with coordinating and facilitating Peer Mentor team meetings, training sessions, orientations, and other program activities.

Support the onboarding and training of new Peer Mentors by helping communicate program expectations, procedures, resources, and best practices.

Assist program staff with planning, coordinating, and implementing workshops, orientations, student activities, outreach efforts, and campus events.

Help coordinate mentor assignments, schedules, activities, and communications as directed by program staff.

Maintain accurate and timely program documentation, including mentoring contact logs, participation records, event information, and other program-related records.

Communicate regularly with program staff regarding student needs, mentoring activities, program participation, and issues that may require additional support or follow-up.

Identify and appropriately refer students to campus resources and services when needs extend beyond the scope of peer mentoring.

Assist with outreach and recruitment activities designed to increase student awareness and participation in the Peer Mentor program.

Represent the Peer Mentor program at campus events, outreach activities, student panels, committees, and other approved activities.

Provide feedback to program staff regarding Peer Mentor activities, student engagement, program operations, and opportunities for improvement.

Assist with the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and training of Peer Mentors, as directed by program staff.

Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries when working with students and handling student information.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Basic principles and practices of peer mentoring, student engagement, and student success.

Campus resources, programs, and services relevant to the students served by the assigned Peer Mentor program.

Basic leadership, teamwork, and group facilitation principles.

Effective communication and interpersonal practices.

Basic event planning and coordination practices.

Basic recordkeeping and documentation practices.

Common computer applications, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and virtual communication platforms.

Principles of confidentiality, professional boundaries, and appropriate handling of student information.

Exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality when handling student information.

Report to work on a regular and consistent basis, as scheduled, to assigned job.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT


The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

Environment: Work is primarily performed in an office, student services, classroom, meeting, or other campus environment. Incumbents regularly interact with students, Peer Mentors, faculty, staff, and administrators and may work in a variety of indoor and outdoor campus settings in support of program activities, outreach, workshops, orientations, and events. Work may require occasional evening or weekend hours depending on program needs and scheduled activities. The position may involve frequent interruptions, changing priorities, and interaction with individuals with diverse backgrounds, needs, and experiences. Incumbents are expected to maintain a professional, supportive, and welcoming environment and appropriately handle confidential student information.

Physical:Work is primarily sedentary and involves sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods. Incumbents regularly use a computer, keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other standard office equipment. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, electronically, and in group settings. Incumbents may occasionally move between offices, classrooms, meeting spaces, and other campus locations and may assist with setting up or taking down materials and equipment for workshops, orientations, outreach activities, and events. Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of supplies or materials weighing up to 25 pounds may be required. The position requires sufficient visual, auditory, and manual dexterity abilities to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supplemental Information


Work Schedule: TBD - Schedule and shift vary and are subject to change in accordance with the department's needs.

Hours per Week: Up to 20

Employment Conditions and Information:

This is a short-term, temporary, hourly Non-Bargaining Unit (NBU) assignment, not to exceed 160 days and 960 hours per fiscal year (July 1st through June 30th). Short-term, temporary NBU positions may only be used on an intermittent, seasonal, or project basis. Education Code Section 88003 states "Short-term employee means any person who is employed to perform a service for the district, upon the completion of which, the service required or similar services will not be extended or needed on a continuing basis."

After successful completion of the onboarding requirements, an individual may be employed by the South Orange County Community College District (SOCCCD) as a short-term, temporary NBU employee. Employment will be on an "if and as needed" basis, as determined by the SOCCCD. The assignment may be shortened or extended at any time, due to departmental needs, with little to no notice. NBU employment is at-will, and either party may terminate this working relationship at any time. Neither party shall be required to provide any reason for the separation. NBU employees shall not have reemployment rights or recourse to petition to be reinstated.

NBU employees are limited to working in a single position for a single department and site (assignments are onsite only).

NBU employees are paid on a monthly basis. The payroll reporting period is from the 1st of the month to the last day of the month. NBU employees are paid on the 10th of the following month.

Example: For the following reporting period: January 1st through January 31st, the NBU employee will be paid on February 10th.

NBU employees who work more than 1000 hours per fiscal year are required to contribute to the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), through payroll deduction. The SOCCCD does not intend to employ NBU employees for more than 960 hours during any fiscal year.



Notice to all Candidates for Employment:

The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, Public Law 99-603, requires that employers obtain documentation from every new employee which authorizes that individual to accept employment in this country. The South Orange County Community College District (SOCCCD) will not sponsor any visa applications.

Employees must reside in California while employed with the SOCCCD.

California Public Employees Retirement System and California State Teachers Retirement System:

A California Public Employees Retirement System ("CalPERS") retiree may not accept employment as a CalPERS retired annuitant (i.e., "extra help" or "interim or acting for a vacant position") with the SOCCCD until after the first 180 days of retirement. Anyone retired from CalPERS accepting employment in a position that qualifies for membership in CalPERS with the SOCCCD will be required to reinstate as an active CalPERS member. Please contact CalPERS for additional information regarding your retirement status.

Any active vested member of California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS), who accepts employment with the SOCCCD to perform service that requires membership in CalPERS, is eligible to elect to continue retirement system coverage under CalSTRS.
