DEPARTMENT

Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC) is one of nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LAHC) and is located in the city of Wilmington, near the Port of LA. LAHC offers a wide range of academic and career technical education programs and transfers its students to the campuses of the CSU and UC systems as well as private institutions. The nursing program is located within the division of Health Sciences and is approved by the CA-BRN and had been nationally accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) since 1997. The nursing program has consistently maintained an NCLEX first time pass rate that exceeds the state and national average.

We are seeking candidates who are progressive thinkers, skilled in the use of technology and simulation, and have a holistic approach to patient care. Having sensitivity to and understanding of the diversity of community college students and patients (academic, socioeconomic, cultural, age, gender, ethnicity, etc.) is a must. Candidates must have a desire to share creative strategies that will guide the educational process for future nurses. JOB DESCRIPTION

In accordance with LACCD's mission; as a community college, instruction at LAHC focuses on creating pathways for certificates, degrees, and transfer. Faculty members at LAHC are expected to create a learning-centered environment that supports students in fulfilling their educational goals. The assignment involves curriculum development and evaluation, web-enhanced course development, attendance of department and discipline meetings, professional activities, and college committee work.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess current clinical and classroom skills in registered nursing education in the area of Psychiatric Mental Health nursing. Interested individuals who meet the LACCD and CA BRN minimum qualifications with required training and experience in Psychiatric Mental Health are invited to apply for this position.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master'sdegree in Nursing; OR
  • Bachelor'sdegree in Nursing AND Master's in Health Education or Health Science; OR the equivalent; OR
  • The minimum qualifications as set by the California Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher:

1. At least one year of experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care within the last five years in Medical-Surgical Nursing area;or

2. Minimum one year teaching experience (two academic semesters or three quarters) of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in med/surg or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency and completion of at least one year of experience teaching courses related to med/surg or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing.

  • A current California registered nursing (RN) license.

  • Demonstrated evidence of sensitivity to and understanding culturally diverse academic, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.



    Desired Qualifications:

  • Completion of a course in teaching techniques/methods offered at an accredited institution;

  • Experience teaching in an accredited nursing program or full-time teaching experience in nursing education;

  • Knowledge of test construction and evaluation measures;

  • Experience in program review and quality core measures of accrediting agencies;

  • Knowledge of curriculum development; contemporary nursing practice; national health care standards;

  • Ability to work with various socio-economic, academic, cultural, and ethnic diverse student populations;

  • Ability to work effectively with students who experience physical or learning disabilities as these variables relate to learning styles and necessary accommodations;

  • Excellent communication skills (oral/ written);

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues as a team member;

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with community educational partners;

  • National or State certification in Nursing Education or area of specialization is strongly recommended.



    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT - COVID 19 VACCINATION:

    Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.



    Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach a full load assignment didactic/theory, clinical and skills laboratory areas of mental health nursing, fostering critical thinking, diverse teaching modalities; supervise and evaluate student performance;

  • Willingness to remediate in a nursing specialty as necessary;

  • Prepare students to work as entry-level registered nurses;

  • Function in a manner consistent with the department's philosophy, curricular theme and unifying conceptual framework, approved course outlines, and plan of instruction;

  • Coordinate student learning experiences (community, clinical, classroom and skills laboratory);

  • Facilitate student learning through a variety of teaching strategies, current technologies and interactive learning environments;

  • Develop, evaluate and revise courses, exams and student learning outcomes to meet the needs of the student, college and the community;

  • Communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, and health care personnel in affiliating agencies;

  • Evaluate effectiveness of teaching/learning using evidence-based standards;

  • Participate in curriculum design, implementation and evaluation;

  • Contribute to Systematic Program Evaluation Reports and self-studies for ACEN and CA-BRN;

  • Participate in the following departmental committees: Faculty, Curriculum, Evaluation and Student Forum;

  • Participate in campus committees;

  • Participate in peer review and evaluation committees;

  • Demonstrate commitment to excellence in nursing education through continual professional development and educational activities;

  • Comply with the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations;

  • Comply with Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) contractual assignment agreements (www.laccd.edu).



    Salary and Benefits

    The current starting range is from $76.960 - $143,000. The doctoral differential is $4,870 per academic year. The district provides an excellent benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
