INTRODUCTION:

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announces an opening for an Electronics instructor at Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC). LAVC is a two-year community college located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley and is one of nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. With an enrollment of more than 18,000 students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, LAVC provides strong transfer, transitional and career educational programs and is committed to student success. The College works closely with local secondary institutions to assist high school students in their transition to higher education and maintains strong ties to the business community by providing highly respected job training programs that meet the direct needs of local employers. The college offers 75 associate degree programs, 26 associate degrees for transfer, 83 certificate programs, as well as continuing education, noncredit, and job training programs. Today, it has more than 200 full-time faculty and more than 400 part-time instructors. LAVC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, and is a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAVC focuses on creating pathways for certificates, degrees, and transfer. Faculty members at LAVC are expected to create a learning-centered environment that supports students in fulfilling their educational goals. The Applied Technology Department offers courses in Architecture, Electronics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Engineering General Technology (construction management), and Manufacturing. Under Electronics, the department offers classes and programs in electronics fundamentals, computer hardware and networking, and biomedical instrumentation.

All instructors are required to teach fifteen hours per week. Evening, online, off-site, and/or split assignments, may be included in this assignment. This is a ten-month appointment; however, additional summer and winter assignments may be available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Teaching the regular load of 15 hours of electronics courses and holding regular office hours.

  • Planning, developing, and implementing course curricula, as well as updating course materials and the course outlines of record

  • Contributing to the development and assessment of student learning outcomes.

  • Completing and submitting required documents in a timely manner.

  • Participating in mandated projects, such as Program Review.

  • Participating in department and campus committees and activities.

  • Participating in professional development activities and maintaining current knowledge in the discipline.

  • Performing other academic duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



    Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirements below as described in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty in the California Community Colleges Handbook for teaching an Electronics course:

  • Any bachelor degree and two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; OR

  • Any associate degree and six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; AND

  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, cultural, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students



    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    The successful candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • At least two years of experience working in electronics positions such as electronics technician.

  • Experience teaching, mentoring, and/or conducting trainings.

  • Interest in working with high schools and other community partners.

  • Commitment to execute non-teaching responsibilities within the department and college.

  • Commitment to maintaining a current knowledge of recent developments in electronics.

  • Commitment to participating in professional development activities related to equity and high impact teaching practices.

  • Ability to set learning outcomes and provide timely and effective feedback to students.

  • Success at initiating, executing and following-up of projects in a timely manner.

  • Ability to function and collaborate in a collegial team setting.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills.



    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

    The current starting range is from $72,990 to $135,620 for the ten-month academic year depending on education and experience. The Ph.D. differential is $461 per academic year.
