Information Technology Support Specialist
WELCOME TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE! We have an exciting opportunity for an individual with a broad understanding of PC hardware and software functionality and troubleshooting techniques to join our team! In this role, you will respond to technical support requests from end users, including College employees and students, to facilitate effective and secure access to District supported technology resources. This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, 12 months per year at Santa Monica College. Please note that work schedules will vary depending on the departmental needs; incumbents will receive an additional 5% beyond the base pay listed due to variable work hours.
Please note that all candidates must have authorization to work in the United States; the District does not have the ability to provide sponsorship.
IMPORTANT: Because this position provides direct IT support to students and employees, it will be fully on-ground. Unfortunately, remote work will not be available.
What You Will Bring to the College
Our ideal candidate will possess significant experience troubleshooting, moving, adding, replacing, repairing, configuring and maintaining computer hardware and software and computer peripherals. The individual will stay updated on new technologies, such as new software, operating systems, and hardware. The selected candidate will be able to maintain a high level of customer service in a high volume, fast-paced environment, and will have excellent critical thinking and fact-finding skills needed to dissect problems and identify the root causes of user issues. The candidate will have experiencing using common office communication tools such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and SharePoint to effectively coordinate with users, colleagues and management to ensure a shared understanding of IT issues across stakeholder groups. Experience performing basic troubleshooting and maintenance of audio-visual equipment is desirable, but not required.

Salary Placement
New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.
Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.7. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.
About the Selection Process
The selection process tentatively consists of a Qualifications Appraisal Interview, possibly preceded by a Training & Experience Evaluation. Candidates must be successful on all test parts to be placed on the eligibility list. Two separate eligibility lists will be created from this recruitment: one for promotional candidates and one for external candidates. The promotional list will be used first, and must be exhausted before we can hire external candidates to fill vacant positions. The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the one year life of the eligibility list, including full-time and/or part-time, permanent and/or temporary positions.
Santa Monica College reserves the right to modify the stated test components and weights prior to the administration of any test.
Certain positions within this classification may require employees to routinely and consistently read, speak, and/or write using a language other than English. Testing of eligible candidates' bilingual proficiency will occur, as needed, as the District identifies positions that require this skill.

Test Retake Policy
Based on the District's hiring needs, we may administer multiple recruitments for this job classification (or a related job classification that uses the same test(s)) within the next several months. Candidates must wait a period of 90 calendar days between testing appointments before retesting. Candidates who are ineligible to participate in an upcoming test or interview due to the provided retake period will be notified via email, and will have their highest valid score(s) on any non-weighted (pass/fail) test parts applied toward that recruitment.

Examples of Duties
Provides broad end user technology support and training to facilitate access to District systems, computers, software, audio visual equipment and peripherals by responding to user requests in-person, by phone, and electronically; provides timely response and resolution to requests and escalates issues to appropriate information technology personnel as needed.
Performs moves, adds, changes, repairs, testing and maintenance of software and IT hardware including computers, monitors, scanners, speakers, and other peripheral devices at all college locations including employee offices, computer labs, and classrooms to provide end users with current and consistent access to hardware and software.
Maintains and troubleshoots basic audio-visual equipment issues, including podium PCs and peripherals; transports, sets up, and operates audio/video equipment for District activities; coordinates efforts with other College personnel and refers as needed.
Creates new images from scratch using appropriate scripting, security, management and deployment tools for smaller, moderately complex ad-hoc deployments using applicable applications.
Performs hardware decommissioning activities and ensures hard drives are securely wiped or shredded according to established processes; updates and maintains department records, including hardware and software license inventory, and internal and customer-facing knowledge base/support resources.
Diagnoses basic network problems by visually inspecting connections and using basic tools (e.g., ping) to check connectivity; escalates problems to appropriate information technology personnel as needed.
Develops technical and procedural documentation as needed.
Assists in hiring and training student workers; schedules work hours and provides work direction to student workers.
Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education Requirement:
Associate's degree in computer science or a related field.
Experience Requirement:
Two years of experience installing and maintaining computer hardware, software and peripherals in a multi-user, networked environment, or two years of experience providing technical support for the set-up and maintenance of audio/video equipment.
Education/Experience Equivalency:
Experience and/or education of the same kind, level and amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Licensure and/or Certification:
A valid driver license.
